Sedona Legge launched Chained by Sedona from a deep love of fashion and her experience as a model working with brands from Gucci, Rodarte, to Chloé. As her life continued to be surrounded by the creative forces which built the world around fashion, she went from in front of the lens to the design side crafting an alluring collection of body jewels in the form of intricate metal body mesh. Embellished and delicate these hand crafted custom pieces became a classic red carpet staple all whilst embracing the natural shapes of her diverse client’s form. Here we discuss her inspirations, the soundtrack to her process and who is next to dress.
What is the ethos and founding of your brand, where are they produced and what has inspired the intricate shapes?
I like to imagine that my designs are created for fairies who are into bondage. They are like the light that shines through the darkness. While working with Alessandro Michele and Tom Ford, I was very inspired by their talent and creativity, so I decided to venture to DTLA Fashion District and purchased beads and chain that inspired me. I put together my first design, beaded sleeves, and my mother immediately saw a space in the fashion world for the brand. The Gucci team was extremely encouraging, which made me believe I could actually do this! The brand began during the beginning of the pandemic, so not many people wanted to watch Netflix in Chained by Sedona which gave us time to organically establish ourselves. I produce each design, by hand threading beads, in my home studio. This might sound odd, but my designs and shapes kind of live in a part of my brain that I like to call my brain palace, and I store them there until I need them for inspiration.
What are some of the inspirations behind the aesthetics of the line. There is a Hollywood cinematic quality to them that is all at once ancient and also a touch of Fritz Lang ‘s The Indian Tomb (1959).
Well, my fashion sense has really been shaped, to a large degree, from my modeling and the fascinating creative teams I’ve been exposed to. I aim to inspire self-expression in my designs, and I want the wearer to feel like they are making a statement in my pieces. They are one-of-a-kind because they are made by hand so you will not go out and see someone else looking like you. I love old Hollywood glam and that has been a source of inspiration for many of my designs, yet with a very modern twist. My designs almost create themselves from the fantasies that play in my mind.
How do you see these pieces being incorporated into a person’s daily wardrobe or as an added statement piece for evening wear?
Because I also design chokers, belts, and accessories that can be worn with literally anything, I think it is easy to add one of my designs into a day or evening look. Chained by Sedona is probably most well known for the headpieces I create which can turn a look into something very unique and magical. My hope is that my designs allow people to be authentically themselves, have fun, and not take things too seriously. Be a fairy, be an elf, be a unicorn!!
What are your top 5 songs to vibe out to when thinking of wearing these pieces?
Midnight, by Johnny Goth
Liquid Smooth by Mitski
God is a Circle by Yves Tumor
Diamond Eyes by Deftones
Icky Thump By White Stripes
Why a Butterfly Can’t Love a Spider by Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes.
From Grimes to Lil Nas X to Doja Cat and Phoebe Bridgers you have had your designs on such an eclectic group of people who do you feel best exemplifies the Chained client, and who is a goal to dress?
We’ve been very fortunate with the brand thus far, and we really relish clients who see the beauty in working with a small artisan brand and creating a true partnership. Impossible to choose one person, but let’s just say it was pretty cool to dress Lil Nas X. I actually used my dad as the fit model! I’ve been working with the team at American Horror Stories as an actor, so it would be amazing to get our designs on AHS at some point. I’m manifesting it now!
